Hydrostatic Pressure & Centre of Pressure Apparatus (SMT-FM-04C)
The Hydrostatic Pressure & Centre of Pressure Apparatus (SMT-FM-04C) is designed to demonstrate the principles of hydrostatic pressure in liquids at rest. Hydrostatic pressure, which is the force exerted by a fluid in a confined space, plays a vital role in many areas of engineering, including shipbuilding, hydraulic engineering, and building services. This apparatus enables students and researchers to carry out experiments that illustrate the effects of hydrostatic forces on immersed surfaces.
The unit consists of a quadrant mounted on the arm of a balance scale that pivots around a fixed axis. When the quadrant is partially or fully immersed in the water tank, the fluid pressure acting on the flat rectangular surface generates a turning moment about the axis. An adjustable counterbalance is fitted to the swinging arm, allowing users to achieve equilibrium and calculate the center of pressure accurately during experiments.
The water tank is equipped with adjustable supporting legs for proper leveling and a drainage valve for convenient emptying after use. A graduated scale indicates the water level inside the tank, ensuring precise measurements during experiments. This setup provides a clear and practical demonstration of fundamental fluid mechanics concepts related to hydrostatic forces and pressure distribution.
