Flow over Weirs and Notches Apparatus (SMT-FM-07-A)
This apparatus is designed for investigating the relationship between the upstream water level and the discharge rate over different sharp-crested weirs. It allows students to perform practical tests and compare their findings with theoretical predictions for both triangular and rectangular notch shapes.
Its design features easily interchangeable plate weirs—triangular, rectangular (and others as required on demand)—that are mounted into a hydraulic bench which supplies a controlled flow of water. A level gauge is included to accurately measure the water head upstream of the weir, which is the essential parameter for determining the theoretical discharge.
The primary application is in educational labs for demonstrating open-channel flow measurement principles. The key benefit is providing hands-on verification of theoretical discharge coefficients, giving students practical insight into a common method used for flow measurement in water management and engineering contexts.
